Are you Superstitious?

Today is Friday, the 13th.... Are you superstitious????? Here are some popular superstitions.
1. Breaking a mirror will bring you seven years of bad luck.

2. Walking under a ladder will bring you bad luck. (I love the picture below, especially this month!!!)

3. Knock on Wood if you want good luck.
4. Black Cats crossing in front of you will bring you bad luck.

5. Blessing someone when they sneeze will bring them good luck and good health.
6. If you spill some salt, immediately pick it up and throw it over your left shoulder--unless you want to experience bad luck.
7. Lucky Rabbit's Foot---if you carry it, you will have good luck.
8. Opening an umbrella inside will bring bad luck.
9. If your left palm itches, you may receive money. If your right palm itches, you may have to PAY money.
10. Crossing your fingers will bring you good luck.

11. Hold your breath as you pass by a cemetery--or else you will breathe in the soul of someone who has recently passed away.
12. A horseshoe hung over your door will bring you good fortune.

13. When you break a turkey wishbone, the person with the biggest piece will have good luck.
14. Finding a four-leaf clover will bring you good luck.

15. Don't step on a crack or you'll break your grandmother's back.

How many of these have you heard???? Do you believe superstitions??? I always worried when a black cat ran across in front of me... I used to cross my fingers when I wanted some good luck... I had never heard of the cemetery one before!!!!

Whatever you do today, I hope that you have a healthy and happy and SAFE Friday, the 13th--and I wish for you LOTS of GOOD LUCK.

Hugs,

P.S. All of the above pictures came from the internet!!

After two particularly dreadful Friday the 13ths, I have to admit that I am a bit cautious.

Hi, Betsy. I don't think of myself as particularly superstitious, but I'll have to admit that I always feel a little apprehensive on Friday the 13th's. Good luck to you, too!

....my grandpa was born on Friday, the 13th----so it's a lucky day for me! :-)
Are you anywhere near that rock slide that closed the highway in TN. I just saw a post of it on Jayne's blog.

I've got a lot of catching up to do. Have been so busy since mid-last week!

Friday the 13th is usually lucky for me...our adress has 13 in it! HAHAHAH.... About the rabbit's foot....not lucky for the poor rabbit..hahahha.

I don't usually try these things out to see if they'll bring bad luck. But I will take a chance with a wishbone and cross my fingers if I really really want something. May good fortune find you today Betsy.

Arkansas Patti said...

I had heard of them all except the cemetary one. Yikes. Seriously, I am not a believer in superstitions.
We did the wishbone when we were kids. My parents would hang it on a nail to dry out. I never got the big piece.

Connie said...

I don't believe in the ones that bring me bad luck---I just ignore those. I only believe in the ones that will bring me good luck like wishing on a star or a chicken wishbone and such. HA! So I guess I am selectively superstitious. :D Have a good weekend, Betsy!

I had never heard the cemetery one before. Will have to pass that one on to the grands as we were talking superstitions this morning. Have a blessed weekend!

I think Friday the 13th is awesome. Especially one that occurred back in 1970. Why? It was the day Vol Fan was born:)

Happy Friday to you Betsy! I hadn't even realized today was the 13th until I saw your post.

Betsy: I do follow some of these but don't feel it is my guide. Walking under a ladder is asking for trouble.

SmilingSally said...

I've heard them all except for holding breath while passing a cemetery. That could be one long breath!

A beautiful weekend to you and George.

Cute post and I'd never heard the one about the cemetery either...

I had heard all but the cemetary one. and I figured even though the rabbit had four feet they mustn't have been good luck for him. Thankfully I have never been superstitious although I think about the saying when I see a black cat.
Good post. MB

I can't help being just a tiny bit superstitious, however, I have always had black cats. I heard most of these from my Irish Mother who has lots more. The Irish love magic both good and bad;)

The cemetery one is new to me. Kind of ghoulish;)

I like the number 13 because there are 13 lunar cycles in the year. 13 got a bad rap.

Very good Friday 13th post, I will pass this on to friends. I had intended to look up these things and forgot because I got caught up in my post I had been working on. this is perfect. I beleive we make our own luck and i have heard almost all of these, but do not believe any of them.

Great post, Betsy... thanks for my morning chuckle.
I didn't realize that it was Friday the 13th. Now I have something to blame all my errors on, at least for today.

Busy Bee Suz said...

Not even a little bit superstitious. :)
My girls do the cemetery one though...I think it is fairly new??
Lo was born on the 13th..she has always had pretty good luck too.

I am not superstitious, however my Mom and Grandmother were VERY superstitious so I have heard most of the ones you have listed plus more.
Did you know that putting new shoes on the table is bad luck? or if you make a face and the wind changes, you'll stay that way?
LOL!
May your Friday the 13th bring nothing but good luck.
Sunny :)

What a fun post Betsy. You know, I didn't realize it was Friday the 13th until I read this post. My mother was very superstitious and I try to not let that be an issue but well, I find myself not crossing on the stairs with anyone. I tell my self that's just common sense but I do remember my mother saying to me, "Don't cross on the stairs, that's bad luck."

I have heard of each one of these and have at some point used all of them in some way, except for the rabbit's foot one. I can't bring myself to even touch one of those! Enjoying your thankful notes each day! Have a wonderful weekend with George.

When my daughter was born on the 13th of the month, I decided it was the luckiest number.

I watched something on (I think it was The History Channel) TV the other night about where all these superstitions originated, but I can't remember most of them cuz the stories all go on forever! hehehe
It's really interesting to watch though, I'll try to record it the next time, so that I can refer back.

Fun post. I wonder if both your palms/hands itch at the same time if you just break even? LOL

The only one I actually do is cross my fingers, more for fun or maybe habit than actual belief. And I'm never w/o a horseshoe over the door, but I just love all tings Western!

No, I'm not superstitious. But I'm amazed at how many guys who play sports are.

I don't believe in luck, Betsy. I believe it's all about God. Except maybe the ladder - never a good idea.

Hi Betsy! I'm not superstitious but had fun reading these anyway! I had heard of all of them!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend. And not because you're lucky; but because you DESERVE it! :o)

We have had some awful things happen the last few years on the 12/13 of the month - the plane crash, our surprise october storm in '06 - but in all honesty I would have to say those things started on the twelveths!

13 has always been one of my favorite numbers (of course I need to add that it is made up of 5 and 8 which are my other favorite numbers).

Just very thankful for another day of life with my husband and kids!

Those are all old traditions, but I am not sure they work. I have found the 13th to be my lucky day. However, I am a little different. Nothing really exciting happened to me today, but nether did anything bad. Thanks for your visit.

Janie said...

I've heard all but the cemetery and itchy palm ones.
I'm not superstitious, but I don't go out of my way to walk under ladders, either!

marmee said...

heard all of these except for holding your breath when passing a cemetary...funny eh?
i am not superstitous...don't have time for it. lol.
happy autumn.

Wendy said...

What a fun post! No, I'm not superstitous. Imagine how many grandmother's would have a broken back???

dmarks said...

Just don't toss the salt on a slug: it might ruin their day.

Unknown said...

Yes, but not on the 13th. I do try to avoid crossing cats, especially black ones. I had a black cat growing up, Pepper ... maybe that makes me immune to that curse, no?

Elizabeth Mahlou said...

I guess the answer is no, I am not superstitious. I did not even realize that it was Friday the 13th until I read your post at 11:00 at night!

Patty said...

I completly forgot today was the 13 until the day was almost over. I am not really a very superstious person. It's a good thing I guess since I love graveyards. If I held my breath every time I got near one I would be in trouble ha ha

SquirrelQueen said...

I've heard most of those and don't believe in any of them. If I thought black cats were bad luck I would be in big trouble since my cat is black! So far Miss Cindi Lou has caused no changes in the luck department.

The 13th went well.
Hugs,
Judy

oops - missed the fact that it was Friday and the 13th to boot. Am still not feeling my best and just hanging around. Slept for 2 hrs. in a spot where the sun shone in the window. That felt good.

I've never been superstitious in the least! Interesting post and a chuckle for sure!
