Icy Cascade behind our Home

We haven't had much snow so far this winter---but it has been COLD.   I walked outside on Saturday afternoon and took some pictures of the iced-over cascade behind our home.  Hope you enjoy these photos today!   (Wish I had SNOW pictures to share---but no such luck!!!)  But --the ice is a nice change!!!!

The first four photos show all of the ripples....  If you look long enough at some of these photos, you can make out designs!!!!!!   Be sure to click on the photos for enlargements.

I love this one showing the ripples as they flow down those rocks.  I can imagine the water flowing here ---and it just STOPS when it freezes... It's like it is 'frozen in time'.

Here  is a close-up of the photo above...  Amazing ripples and designs,  isn't it????

Here it is EVEN closer.... Just amazing!  OH---the things I have learned to LOVE now that I love taking photos (especially macros)! You can see so much more in detail.

These next two photos show some of the icicles.

This is one of my favorite shots --showing the icicles...  Looks like we are in a cave looking at the stalactites....

Here  is a little left-over snow sitting on top of the ice.

You can see the back of our home from here....  We can actually see this cascade from our home ---and it's fun to watch after a hard rain, and of course,  after a very cold spell. (Can you see the smoke coming from our chimney????)

I zoomed in toward the house a little in this photo.  You can see the smoke a little better in this photo.   (That round thing in our backyard is the top of our birdbath.  It will crack if it gets ice in it in the winter, so we turn it over to keep the water out.  I do have a heated birdbath on the deck for the birds in winter.)

Finally, here's a photo showing the entire cascade....  I love the way those rocks are formed ---making it truly a nice little waterfall  (our own of course)... ha

Have a wonderful day.   I have been knee deep into Family History... SO interesting!  BUT--I'm taking a break from that today --while we travel to the SMOKIES to do some hiking.  Maybe we'll see a little snow there --since we aren't getting any here at home!!!!

Stay warm.  There's another frigid cold front coming through on Tuesday --but no snow I don't think, other than flurries. We're getting the horribly cold temperatures this winter --but no snow... Boo Hiss!!!! ha

Ice sure does look pretty. I don't like driving in it and it can do some damage but it makes things looks very pretty

Along with all those wonderful photos, I like the snow falling on your blog. I've tried to do that before on mine but when it gets on there, it looks so phony with all of the Arizona pictures. I miss snow is many ways.

Betsy, pretty shots of your ice cascades. My hubby would hike miles to see the ice. Have a happy day!

Wow, how fantastic is that, and what great photos. I think it is so cool the way the ripples in water freeze, truly amazing. Just another part of God's beautiful creation.

Have a great week ~ love and hugs ~ FlowerLady

It is appropriate that you have a waterfall in your back yard, even a small one, given your love of waterfalls. Nice pictures of the water cascades frozen in place.

Wow...incredible images of the frozen water that was once cascading down...now ice. Very pretty.

I like the pictures showing the cascade and the back of your house. Must be nice to have your own waterfall! We could certainly spare some snow if you'd like - a fresh 6-8" yesterday.

Pretty ice pictures, Betsy! We have a little snow here but not very much. The cold temperatures are definitely here too!

I don't mind that we don't have snow. Had enough of it in my youth while growing up in upstate NY. I do love your ice pictures. When I went up to (actually south but the road climbs mountains) my daughter's home the first weekend in January, there was ice frozen on the rocks on the side of the mountain but as you know, there is no good place to stop and get pictures on the "White Water" River Road. And I didn't have a camera that would zoom with me. Ice is beautiful to view.

Those are some awesome photos. Stay safe and warm during this next cold spell.

You make the ice look so beautiful in your photos. Hope it warms up for you soon.

I always have had a thing for water that normally runs but freezes....it has been a long, long time since I have captured any of it in photos, though.

Neat shots of you ice cascades. I know its pretty when it's running clear water!

Glenda said...

I always love to see the icicles on places where they would not normally appear, such as on a rock wall alongside a heavily traveled road. There is a place on I-75 South, near Chattanooga, where the sun never shines, and when the temps are cold enough, those icicles are breathtaking to look at! Enjoy your day in our "back yard!" There should be snow in Gatlinburg, at least! :-)

Oh, it does look cold!!! Great pictures though!! We're having a pleasant break -- don't know for how long, but blue skies and temps in the low 50s, so I can't complain at all!! Hope you have a great start for your week, Betsy!!

Very pretty but cold looking. We have no snow either. It has been cold--for me--high 30s and low 40s for the daytime high. Slight breeze--Brrrr!
Love the cascade the waterfall from the pond at my house has been roaring because of all the rain we had last week.
Have fun hiking. Wish we were going too. MB

Hi Betsy, I hope you are enjoying the Smokies. I think you usually do! I only have been to the Smokies in the Summer. Gee, that ice looks beautiful there in the Glade. Hope it does warm up or you get snow. A little ice is beautiful - a lot can be, well, hard. Have a great coming week!

A lovely natural feature to have in one's backyard Betsy! I agree macros are wonderful for getting a really detailed look at something you would otherwise miss. These images were really lovely and interesting to look through. Have a great day and find some snow for me Betsy!! I'm melting over here.:)

Right in your own backyard!!! I'm always amazed that something moving can freeze in the first place.

Love your mini frozen water fall and right in your back yard yet. We get that effect here on the bluffs.
How nice to be enjoying a fireplace. I just came in from my hammock. It is 70 degrees today but not for long.
Like you, no or little snow this year. Sigh.

The Winter Season is being a bit chilly to your part of the Country. Great photos of the ice and the pretty little stream. Nothing better than a fire in the fireplace...enjoyed seeing that bit of smoke...

Y'all have fun today.

The ice cascade looks very pretty, Betsy! I never knew you had a little stream behind your yard.

We are having an unusually warm winter here. It was 65 degrees this Sunday! Luckily the high country mountains are getting lots of moisture and snow, otherwise I would be worried about drought. I read it is an El Nino year, so the west will get dry and hot and the east will have more hurricanes --let's hope NOT!

Betsy, Great photos of the frozen cascades We came across the plateau on I-40 today and noted many frozen seeps or cascades working their way out of the limestone rocks. Very nifty indeed! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

You picked a good day to do some hiking. It was so nice here today with a temperature of 57 this afternoon. I worked outside without a jacket. Tomorrow and the rest of the week is going to be a different story as that cold front gets here !
Stay and warm

Hi Betsy, i don't blame you for being ecstatic about those icy flows, if i were you I will be doing the same. They are beautiful, because of erosion the rocks are already exposed, the topsoil already gone. In our area, there is also a dry creek, which has some water during the dry season. I actually go there during heavy rains to shoot what i call Flood Falls, it is brown but better than no falls at all.

Ice always fascinates me. I like your photos. It is really interesting to see how the water has frozen over the rocks.

Enjoy your day today. Hugs!

They are pretty patterns in the ice. I can't imagine how cold it must be to freeze cascading water. Great shots. I think I would be staying in the cozy house.

Sure makes for some beautiful photos Betsy. Gregg just measured the snow out on our back deck, 5 inches. Our first significant snow fall so far. Not as deep as our friends further up north or even out west, but it sure looks pretty. I haven't ventured outside yet, maybe tomorrow.

I guess it's because I've lived most of my life in mild weather, but I'm never seen that before! Amazing!
Love your photos Betsy.

I'm wondering after a heavy rain if you can hear it? That would be lovely.
It's icy here today and three inches plus of snow. I hope to venture out tomorrow for pics if the roads are clear.
