Waterfalls in Little River Canyon, AL
In the previous two blogs (click HERE and HERE), I showed you pictures from our Valentine's Day visit to Little River Canyon near Fort Payne, Alabama. Today I will show you the four waterfalls in the canyon. The largest and 'main' waterfall is LITTLE RIVER FALLS. For waterfall lovers, this one is definitely one of the BEST. Above is a picture of George and me taken at the brink of Little River Falls.. Below are more of all four of the waterfalls in the canyon.
Is this not a gorgeous waterfall?? Can you see George standing out there near the edge?????
Now-- George took a picture of me near the edge...Wonder why he kept asking me to "BACK UP"???????? ha ha
We went to another overlook on the other side ---and took pictures of Little River Falls from a distance. The 300mm lens worked well here.
This small waterfall (at a distance, across the canyon from where we were ) is HAWKS GLIDE FALLS. No--we didn't see any hawks, but we did see a little water in this seasonal waterfall. My picture shows the lower part of the waterfall--since it traveled all of the way down the canyon wall.
This was a new waterfall for us this trip. Since it doesn't have a name (that we can find), we have named it VALENTINE FALLS since we were there on Valentine's Day. It is a pretty little cascade that curves around and flows down over rock steps. I enjoyed seeing the moss-colored rocks.
This is another seasonal waterfall called GRACES HIGH FALLS. It was across the canyon from our overlook --but was larger and easier to photograph than Hawks Glide Falls. You can see all of the ice around the base of the waterfall.
Here's a close-up picture of Graces High Falls. This 'high' waterfall plunges past river-carved sandstone. Some rocks and fossils exposed here are more than 300 million years old. WOW!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Hugs,

The waterfall is quite big! I realized it when i saw the second picture with George in it.
Fabulous waterfall!
when you read my blog today you will know why I am laughing out loud at the pictures of the two of you standing out there. love the photos
These are all fantastic pictures, Betsy! I especially like the ice at the base of Graces High Falls and the green on the rocks of Valentine Falls.
Love that you guys are brave enough to get those 'close to the edge' pics. I have a fear of edges!!
When hubby and I are trying to decide what to do one weekend, I'm going to use you as our own private tour guide.
Your world is full of canyons and beautiful waterfalls. The sound must have been loud.
The powerful falls are awesome but I kind of like the gentleness of Valentine Falls. Great name.
I bet you had a wonderful time there, Betsy! They really are pretty falls. You got some great pictures too. Have a nice weekend!
Wow Betsy. beautiful falls, beautiful photos. Bless you. (((Hugs))) Jo
Beautiful pictures! Isn't it amazing how a steady trickle over the years can patiently carve itself a new path and totally change the landscape - although it takes a few years, lol! Have a lovely week-end! Hugs!
Beautiful Falls Betsy, but you wouldn't get me to stand close to the edge. ;)
I always feel like I've been on a mini vacation looking at your wonderful pictures. These falls are really beautiful.
Enjoy your weekend.
Sunny :)
I agree with Sunny. It dose feel like you have taken along on your journey. And you are right Betsy, the falls are gorgeous!
Great shots of you and George.
Oh wow amazing falls, Betsy! Thank you for taking us on this wonderful journey. Those falls are beautiful! Wow, 300 million years old! Interesting. You and George are so lucky to have seen those beautiful falls. :)
More great pictures, the waterfalls are spectacular and big too! I think my fave is Valentine Falls as I love the curve and the colours.
What beautiful waterfalls!!!
Did George HAVE to be that close to the edge? I think he needs to wear a helmet and a life vest next time!
spectacular!
i would love to see that in the summertime, too!
I wish you could have had this weekends weather sunny and 60. It is going to a nice weekend! Hope yours is great as well.
Gorgeous waterfalls. We missed almost all of the good winter hiking because of my husband's injury. Winter is our favorite time to hit the trails. Glad you and George are giving us these wonderful photographs.
I wanna go there!
All the photos look so tempting. You guys have such a fun life :)
Such lovely waterfalls, Betsy, with gorgeous pictures of them. But you and George both make me chew my fingernails a bit getting so close to those edges! You two are truly brave and adventurous souls. I love all the falls you've pictured, but love the mossy rocks of Valentine Falls the best. It looks like a place that fairies might live! :-)
G'morn Betsy ~ What GORGEOUS AWESOME pics of the waterfalls! Reminds me of WA ST (my birth place). You two ae TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE for me, tho.
Have a beautiful weekend.
Hugs, Marydon
Wow, again and again! I love the falls you've named "Valentine's Falls" and that seems to be just the perfect name for it! A lovely photo of you and George. Gosh, I am delighted that I am "tagging along" on your trips to see these wonderful waterfalls!
Oh, my! I don't know which is my favorite!! Well, the one with George!! It's stupendous, a double whammy fall, and the colors are beautiful. But I think it's the fourth picture down, you can even see fine, tiny spray on the left that's coming from the fall. This may be my favorite waterfall post yet! The mossy rocks look frightening!
Betsy--FANTABULOUS! Little River Falls is huge. Love them all. MB
What a wonderful trip in that wonderful place.
Stunning...
Greetings from snowy Stockholm.
xoxo
A good thing you let us in on all your journeys and all those places you get to see ... because the likelihood of us getting to see them is pretty slim. I love how you two get out on SO many adventures and live life to the fullest!
Betsy: Great photos from a neat falls. Have a great trip.
Wow,that is such gorgeous scenery. Each of the falls is unique and beautiful. Thanks for the tour.
Blessings,Ruth
Hi, Betsy ~ TY for popping over ... the story is not of my family but at the bottom it credits Michael Gartner, Pulitzer prize author, for the beautiful story of his family.
Wow! How fortunate you are to have parents still living & so active. God bless them ... My dad dropped dead at ae 60 with no medical issues known. I did a post last week & this week on heart disease that you should read, it is very important & directed for women.
Have a beautiful weekend, my friend. Looking forward to more excursions & travelling with you.
Hugs, Marydon
Valentine's Falls--I love it! I'm glad you had an enjoyable trip, Betsy. :)
Apparently, you two have no fear. No way would I stand that close to the edge of the falls. It is a truly lovely place. Glad you are out and about enjoying each other and life.
My favorite shot is the one you took of Valentine's falls...just gorgeous!
All of them are beautiful places to visit!!
P.S. Just a photography tip: you may want to lower your exposure a little to make it a little darker? These look a tad too bright? or maybe it is just my computer??
Beautiful waterfalls! I want to GO there!!!!
come see me again...
These are really nice shots, but I especially like the 2nd & 3rd ones, they show just how big the place is & how large the rocks & waterfall is. Niiice!
Betsy,
Thought of you when I saw Big Stone Gap, Virginia Newspaper online at

That section of Alabama has some of the most gorgeous falls, and views. I love the photos of you and George at the edge. It does look a little cold out there.
