More from Grassy Cove, TN

Last week, I posted a set of pictures from our ride to Grassy Cove, TN. IF you missed the first set, CLICK here. Today, I'm posting more pictures from that wonderful area--which is south of Crossville. The picture above shows the little steeple of the Grassy Cove United Methodist Church. One thing I noticed about this little church is that the building is small---but they have added the cemetery on three sides of the building now. We didn't see another church in Grassy Cove ---so I assume that most everyone in the valley belongs to that little church, and that their friends and relatives who have died are probably buried there. More pictures are below.

I enjoyed reading this sign, and knowing that this little church was established in 1803, and that the land was given by one of the original settlers in Grassy Cove, who had been a Revolutionary War soldier.

Here's one more picture of the little church --with one of the three cemeteries in the side yard. I mentioned this last week, but it looks as if the church is having some roof work done.

I'll bet if you have ever driven in the south, you have seen these barns ---dotted all around Tennessee and other states... There is a tourist attraction in Chattanooga, TN called "Rock City".... Years ago---they did their advertising by putting signs on most every barn in the south!!!! Great advertising, don't you think???? WELL--there aren't many of these barns left---but I found one in Grassy Cove... Neat, huh????

"Okay, Bessie, I told you to get your family out of my front yard... And ole Marybelle is almost on my front porch. Sssshhheeessshhh." (This sight just made me laugh outloud... Obviously, that little house is empty now ---but at one time, it was someone's beautiful home. (My parents used to talk about the cows wandering all throughout my hometown of Big Stone Gap, VA --before the town made an ordinance to keep them out of people's yards!!!! That was before I was even a gleam in my Daddy's eyes!)

Here's one last picture of that beautiful little valley, Grassy Cove, TN... OH--wouldn't I love to live there !!!!!

Hope you enjoyed my pictures from that little ride on July 18. This past Sunday, we headed NORTH of Crossville ---so I'll share some pictures from this little ride soon.

Have a fabulous Tuesday.
Hugs,

I love the beautiful old church building. The barn sign is still in good shape. The man that painted a lot of those really old signs was related to my mom's family. I can never remember which side of the family but I think it my just be marriage.
Hope you have a good day. Did you get any rain yesterday? We didn't get much rain but a storm. A LARGE pine tree in Mom's yard was hit by lightning and looks like it may have to be cut down.

the photo of the cows in the front yard did make me laugh out loud. wish I could have seen it for real. the church is a part of history and I do like history thatis preserved for us. it has been 50 years since i have seen one of those barns, as a child I saw them everywhere between Savannah Ga and Pineville Ky, 12 hour trip on winding roads, not I-95 them. the signs were everyywhere and lots of others to. thanks for the memories

Years ago my oldest brought her pony in the house---she thought it was funny . Now the goats think they should come up on the deck. I say NO NO NO!! MB

Hi Betsy, what a nice drive in the country! Being from TN, I've seen a many of those Rock city ads on barn roofs. You know you're in the country when you see cows at your front door! LOL!

What a cute area! I LOVE rock city, and I have one of the barns (bird house) in my craft room!
Those cows looked a bit perturbed that you were taking their picture. Darn paparazzi!!!!

I like to explore the back roads and discover nice spots like this.

If I lived there, I'd definitely have to put up a fence to keep the cows out of my garden.

What a wonderful place. A piece of rural America much like it was 50 years ago.

I remember those Rock City signs. Seems like I've seen them all over the south. Crossville looks like a neat little community.

Grassy Cove almost has a touch of New England about it. Maybe it's because of the trees and mountains or maybe the cows in the front yard -haha! Too bad that little house is empty, it doesn't look that old.

Seen those ads growing up but never actually saw Rock City. Maybe someday.
Love old church graveyards. They are full of stories.
Nice trip and cost us nothing. Thanks.

Love the little barn advertising, Betsy. Around here there used to be a lot of advertising for the Black Hills and Wall Drug! A lot of it has sadly disappeared. Diane

Hi Betsy, I really enjoy seeing your post about Grassy Cove. That "See Rock City" barn ad is great! I have noticed that some enterprising individual has created a line of ornamental birdhouses with a copy of that advertisement on them. How about that! It's a rainy day & we are glad!

The cows are funny in the front yard! That house is too nice to sit empty! Never heard of Rock City, but surely you can't see 7 states from it, so what does that mean? The little church has an interesting arch there and the tombstones are plaintive against the mountains. Thanks for taking us along on your trip! The sprinkler pool is all one peice. There are little holes poked all around the tubing edge, so as long as the hose is hooked into the pool, water sprays up all around it. You can find them for under $15.00. But if you pick one up for the heatwave, don't get to galavanting around it too much, 'cause you need to be mindful of your knee!!! Ha ha!

To those who've never been to Rock City...the ad is true. You CAN see 7 states. I went there as a child as we traveled to the South often to see family.

Loved the barn picture, and you are so fortunate to live near these wonderful hills and mountains. Nothing quite like it!

I visited Rock City years and years ago. I had forgotten that visit until I saw your barn picture.

I've seen those Rock city signs on the barns when we go to Dollywood and Cades Cove, can't remember what road they are on though.
Those cows in the yard of that house reminded me of when I used to drive a school bus when my children were just starting school. I made a stop at a house that had all their farm animals in their yard. What a mess it was!!!!
Blessings to you

Yep, you really could see 7 states from Rock City. I remember those signs well, they used to be on every barn you saw.

Grassy Cove looks like a peaceful place to live or visit. I really like the little church.

Love that barn !
There is something about the little coves and 'hollers' dotted about Tennessee that constantly is calling me.
A wonderful day out, and thank you for sharing the beauty.

We once lived in the central NY town of Mecklenburg, named after the Hessen soldier who defected from the Brits, served with the Colonials, and received a land grant. I love the way the history of place is shaped in ways like this--the Roman army, I believe, began the tradition of giving land grants on the frontier to retired soldiers. Never mind about the Indians (or, for the Romans the Germans etc) that already lived there...

That's a beautiful little church with a lot of years of history attached.
Funny photo of the cows in the yard!
I've seen barns advertising things, but the signs are getting more and more faded.
I wonder how they decided Rock City was the World's 8th wonder?! Why not go for 5th or 6th?

so inviting.
A completely, more laid back, slower life than the one I lead.
It looks pleasant.

I like that little church! So unusual looking with that arched entry. Love the barn! I haven't seen a Rock City barn in years, but can remember seeing them when I was younger on a drive down south....and I remember going to Rock City and looking out at 7 states (even if I didn't know exactly what I was looking at).
