A Nice Place to Rest

Last Friday, while working in the yard, we saw six deer on the golf course fairway behind our house. Usually, when the deer come out to graze on the fairway grass, they are very observant --and will run away quickly if they see a human. SO--we have to be very quiet when taking their pictures.

BUT--this day was very different. The deer strolled down the fairway ---and just stopped. Then they did something I've never seen them do. Some of them (the little ones) just lay down on the ground apparently to rest a little. Soon some golfers came by... The deer did not leave or move!!!! (And that is very rare!).. The golfers hit balls around them--and went on about their business. The deer stayed there until dark! I guess that pretty grass gave them a nice place to relax and rest. We did not see them leave---but George did get some good pictures of them.

Isn't this just the sweetest little guy you've ever seen???? Wonder how old he is? Maybe he's just a baby--and they had to stop and let the younger ones rest. Wonder if this was his first 'outing'????

The larger deer seemed to 'keep watch'---while the little ones rested.

Look at that little one with his eyes closed. How Precious!

"Oh, this pretty green grass is just so comfy. I want to stay here forever."

We've posted alot of deer photos, but these just happen to be some of my favorites. As of today (5 days later), we haven't seen the deer at all. BUT---I'm sure they'll be back soon!!!
Hugs,

  2. Awww... these photos just made me smile! =)
Isn't wildlife amazing? These are beautiful photos and I have noticed the deer becoming a little more active here now that the weather is becoming warmer.

  3. that looks like a yearling, Betsy. I don't believe it was its first outing as new fawns are born in spring and will be smaller with white spots on their back and sides. Spots act as camaflauge while in the woods. I wonder if it was sick to act out of character?

  4. Such sweet photos. I wonder if the poor deer was sick or something.

  7. Great photos, Betsy! Like other commenters, I wonder if the young ones were sick. That is certainly unusual behavior. I do hope they don't get whacked with a golf ball someday!

I loved your beautiful waterfall shots.

  8. Betsy,
Oh I'm so jealous of...first the green of your grass, second, how close your deer are to your house, and did I mention the green of your grass and that sunshine!!!

Great pictures George! You caught some winners there..I love seeing and photographing deer.

  10. I can't blame them for wanting to relax on that lovely green grass. Kind of makes me want to go and take a nap. Unfortunately I have to get ready for work.

  11. Oh thanks for sharing. I love watching deer. We live on farm land and see them often but they never get close to us.

  16. Wow! I've never heard of deer just laying down and making themselves comfy while people milled about.... maybe they had an "animal conversation" with a dog, and the dog said "Look here. These humans mean you no harm (unless they have a gun). Just hang out and relax. Maybe they'll toss you a milk bone." :)

  19. Betsy, I think deer are among the most elegant creatures. How wonderful for you to see them on the fairway behind your house. It is strange that they weren't afraid of people that day. The green grass does look inviting!

  21. Betsy: How neat that you got to see these girls so close. I had three run by behind the house. A dog was running through the area loose and was keeping them on the move.

  26. Great pictures. They must be getting use to the people.
I had a little fawn a couple of years ago for two days by my garage. Mom went off and then came back to get her. Of course I worried sick about it the entire time, but every one told me to wait and see if the mom returned , and she did.

  27. They are beautiful and elegant. When we were kids we never seen deer near out home in Tennessee...now, when we go home we see them in the field in front of the house. And here, I go east one block and am at a railroad, and every now and then see one down there. Or I should say glimpse, because they are just out of there when they see me.

  28. What a sight! Deer: "No we're fine, you people go ahead, play through!"

  29. How fun for you, I wonder why they were so tame? We've had a few in our neighborhood over the years but they never stick around for long!

  30. Oh, Betsy, they are so sweet! Notice how their coats are changing to their summer colors! The deer around our house are also -- their coats look nappy during the changeover. Doug puts food out for the deer each evening and they show up when it is time. They aren't afraid of us; we can walk outside and talk and they aren't any farther than maybe 10 yards or less away from us. When he's putting out the food, they come close to him also. After eating, the little ones will often start running around in the lower pasture, full hilt, and kicking up their heels, as though to give us a show to say "thanks." Deer are fun to watch! Thanks for sharing these adorable pictures!

  31. Betsy, First the flickers then the deer, you truly are blessed to be able to share such precious wildlife moments.

  32. Such sweet pictures of baby deer. Are you able to plant a vegetable garden with so many deer around? I get a few, not as many as you, and last summer they ate all the brocoli that I planted.

  33. Sipping my cup of tea, reading your blog, and enjoying the photos of the deer, now it can't get better than that!

  34. Beautiful pics Betsy. From what I know about them when they loose their spots their age is almost where they go out on their own.
That little cutie in the second pic. has a smorgasbord. He knows it too.
They seem to be use to people. They are gorgeous animals.

  35. Never seen deer so tame before ... Excellent shots!

  36. Great Pictures of those sweet Bambies! We have a little family of deers that visit us. I am sure they will really visit this summer when I get the garden coming in.

  37. They are such charismatic mega fauna! Deer always take the best photos (and they never seem to be smiling?) ... Our deer down here are very small. They are called key deer.

  38. Great shots of those deer Betsy. Nice that they gave you such an opportunity to watch them up close and personal like that.

  39. OH how sweet! We only see deer from a distance here, though I have to tell you.... One day my husband and I were out for a walk and lost our kitty along the way. I stopped in the road and started calling, "Here kitty, kitty, kitty!" All of a sudden out of the corner of my eye, I saw a deer out in the field, running my way! It got fairly close as I continued to call, then suddenly realized something wasn't right, stopped and ran the other way! It was the most bizarre thing. I'd love it if they came up on our yard this way, but I don't think our dog would let them!

  40. Wouldn't be a new one this year, not small enough, and no spots. Must be last years baby. These photos are so good. The little is cute.
