As I mentioned last week in my Cardinal blog post, I have gotten many good pictures of my Backyard Birds recently... I got pictures of two new birds to my feeder (a Juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker and a Juvenile Red-bellied Woodpecker) this month ---and I saw another new one yesterday while working in the yard (but didn't get a picture yet).
This new one is a Hairy Woodpecker.. There are lots of Downy's which come to the suet feeder --but yesterday, a GREAT BIG Hairy Woodpecker made his way there.. I watched him and got so excited, but since I was in the yard working, my camera wasn't anywhere near. Sigh!! I hope he comes back so that I can get his picture sometime. The Hairys look like the Downys except for the fact that they are larger and have a longer beak. I hope he comes back sometime when I have my camera!!!!
Today, I am featuring an "All-Woodpecker-Post".... Above is one of the largest woodpecker we have in our area, the PILEATED WOODPECKER... Below are more!!!!
JUVENILE RED-HEADED WOODPECKER: When I first saw this bird, I had no idea what it was.. His colors are SO different from an adult.
JUVENILE RED-HEADED WOODPECKER: I just had to include one more picture of this little bird.. I hope to get more pictures as he begins to get his colors!!!!
ADULT RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER: The little juvenile will look like this (depending upon whether it is a male or female) soon. Female Red-bellieds do have red on their heads--but it's not solid along the top and back of the head like the males. And --for any of you non-birders, the adult Red-bellied Woodpeckers DO have a red belly.. It's just hard to see!!!!
NORTHERN FLICKER: This is always one of my favorite birds. This is a male since he has a black mustache, and more red on his head (which is hard to see in this picture).
Hope you enjoyed seeing my pretty little woodpeckers.. I have more birds to show you--but that will be next week. By the way, do you know which of these woodpeckers is the one which Woody Woodpecker represented????? Take a guess!!!!

what a clever way to feed woody. I just throw my food on the ground to feed my sparrows and pigeons.
ReplyDeleteOnce, after seeing photos on the blogs, I experimented by string a bun onto the tree branch where the sparrows normally perch.
Not one sparrow came to eat the bun.
May be it is easier for them to peck the food from the ground.
I'd say the Pileated.....
ReplyDeleteWhen I was cutting up the downed Bradford Pear, I was amazed at the thousands of woodpecker feeding holes I found on the branches. We see all but the red headed variety around here, but I've never seen one. I sure have enjoyed walking out into cool morning air the past couple of mornings.

Hi Betsy, love your shots! We don't have big trees in our yard so don't get any woodpeckers. Enjoyed seeing yours. Loved the shot of the northern flicker. Such a pretty bird and great shot. I think Woody was your first pick, the Hairy Woody.

ReplyDeleteOh, I DO love the woodpeckers. We have loads of them in our yard because of the tree stands here and all around. They are not easy to photograph but you've done a marvelous job of capturing them in all their glory.

isn't it unususal to have so many different species of woodpeckers in one place like you have? we have red bellies and pileated downhere, the others i have not seen. they are all precious and beautiufl. i especially like the first one today.

A long time ago, Chuck and I were awakened by an extremely loud taptaptaptaptaptaptap on our metal roof. "What's that?" I asked, and he went into a long, involved description about how an electrical wire must have fallen on the metal roof and was sparking, and we were in a dangerous situation. I was scared! He went outside to check out the 'dangerous situation' while I cowered in the bed.
When he came in he had a sheepish look on his face. I asked him if we needed to call the EPB and evacuate our home. "No", he said. "It was a woodpecker."

My very favorite picture here is the red headed, because I've never seen one and they are so striking! I am also enjoying seeing a baby woodpecker, their colors are sure undeveloped! I knew what Woody was, did a post on it, but cannot remember at all now! He was a real woodpecker who....but wait, if you're going to do a post on it, I'll let YOU tell the story! I read that ALL woodpeckers have red on them somewhere!

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely series of woodpecker photos Betsy. I had a downy visit me yesterday and just now while I was chatting to Gregg on the phone, I had a mommy cardinal feeding her youngster on the deck rail. It was too dark for a photo though :(

ReplyDeleteAll of the woodpeckers are so cool and the babies are adorable. My favorite is the Northern Flicker, they are such pretty birds. We have Flickers here at times too.
Oh, Woody had to be a pleated woodpecker..they act the same!
ReplyDeleteLove all these...at work there was a big metal washtub turned upside down. I can't remember if it covered something or just why it was there...but there was this big flicker that would get on it and peck the bottom every day!
