Daylilies in our Yard this Summer

2009 has been a great year in our yard for both Lilies and Daylilies. We have had 20 different varieties of Lilies--plus 14 different varieties of Daylilies (so far). George thinks there may be a few more Daylilies which have not bloomed yet. Today, I'll show you some of these pretty Daylilies. Above is a group of Daylilies next to our garage. Below are more!

This beauty is named BRIGHT SUNSET.

Her name is CAROLYN CRISWELL.

We have more of these than any other, and they expand every year. I call them my DAD ADAMS Daylilies since my sweet father-in-law gave them to us several years ago.

I love this one. Her name is HUSH LITTLE BABY.

Meet PRAIRIE BLUE EYES.

Want a bite of this one???? This is STRAWBERRY CANDY.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A Brown Thrasher visits the suet feeder. Since all Thrashers look alike to me, I don't know which is Mama and which is Papa ---or if there are more than TWO of them around. I have only seen two at one time... Soon though, there will be three more, since there is a nest in our Confederate Jasmine bush.

This is not a great picture---but while I sat outside watching the nest yesterday, I captured Mama and Papa --taking turns going back and forth, and back and forth feeding the babies. I could hear the babies cry when one of the parents would get there with a worm in his/her mouth for the babies. The parents were NOT happy that I was around ---but I sat far back and quite still for awhile --and they finally went about their business. But--they knew I was there!!!

Here's one more photo of one of the parents trying to hide from me. Both parents would holler out with a loud CHIP or CLACK sound when I got too near. I read where Brown Thrashers will come after anyone or anything that gets close to their babies. I certainly do not want that big beak to peck at me!!!! YOW!!

I hope to see the babies fledge---but if I do, it will only be because I was in the right place at the right time... Who knows????????

Have a great Wednesday.
Hugs,

  1. Hi Betsy;) what beautiful lilies and beautiful shots of them. Thanks for sharing. I'm intrigued with the birds you get: the Brown Thrashers resemble our "thrushes" slightly. Thanks for your comment on my blog post last week. I'm not sure whether I replied (see happenings in our lives from Sunday through Wednesday, re dh's travelling) so I'm replying here. Super to blog with another Christian. I'm pleased you found love and companionship again. I enjoy your blog and will be back often. Blessings Jo xxx

  3. What lovely lilies!

Our thrashers have been seen attacking crows and cranes (though the cranes aren't a danger to them!) and driving them away from their nesting site. It's quite the comical scene to see a tiny little bird ariel dive a MUCH larger bird!

  4. Those are gorgeous daylilies, Betsy. I know your Dad Adams lilies must be extra special. I'd give anything to have gotten something from my Grandma's garden, but she died when I was young and her garden has long since been paved over for a subdivision.

  5. Lovely shots of the birds. We usually are inundated with all kinds of birds but they have all vanished. Our feeders are full at the end of every day for about two weeks now. I can hear them but don't see them. I can only think that they are feeding babies with the abundance of flies and mosquito's we have now!

  6. Got to go with Bright Sunset for both color and ruffles. All are georgeous though.
Loved the Thrasher pics. It is so cool that nature finally let a female bird dress up as well as the male.

  12. Love all the varieties of Daylilies. We got several varieties from my mother in law a few years ago. They bloomed and were beautiful but now only one variety we got from her blooms. Don't know what happened to them.

  13. What a lovely visit I had in your beautiful personal park! I just love seeing all the birds you have and discover hiding away in the bushes!! Your flowers are gorgeous - and a lot of work I'm sure. It will be interesting to see your new flower bed in the ditch - another beautification project!

  19. I remember my grandma having solid orange day lilies in her yard when I was young - her or grandpa would take me through the yard and tell me the names of all the flowers, then we'd go again. I miss them so much! Just wanted to share that lil story.

    Very pretty flowers you have!

  24. Lovely, lovely lilies, Betsy! Mine are just about finished for the season. I still have a stand of my triple-layer ditch lilies in bloom, but almost everything else is gone, gone, gone. I shall have to turn my gardening efforts to some things that will bring me season-long color.

  33. Beautiful daylilies, you have more varieties than I even knew existed. I love the color of the one you call Dad Adams, that is just striking.

The Brown Thrasher is just cute, I'm having trouble getting close to the birds this year. Wonder is having a cat at my heels has anything to do with that?

  34. I love lilies ... one of my favorite flowers and I'm going to have to add to mine next year. I have just the place for them (I think) -- a space that we cleared out just in time for the heat to hit. So the blank space sits. That's ok. It's talking to me -- telling me that lilies would be nice! :D :D We are enjoying the bird families in/near our yard, too.

    Hugs--
