Freeze of '09-- Part II

Well---hopefully, the cold spell is over!!! We did have some low temps early Wed. morning, in the upper 20's. BUT---there wasn't any frost, and the temperatures rose quickly. In fact, our temperatures went up to almost 60 degrees yesterday. Yeah Rah!!!!!

We uncovered everything yesterday and put all of the pots/hanging baskets back outside. I think everything --including us--enjoyed seeing the bright sunshine. Now--maybe (just maybe) we can get back to enjoying SPRING... Ya think?

Here are the final pictures from this year's 'Spring Freeze'.... Right now I feel blessed that we didn't have any damage-- at least, none that we've found so far! The picture above is snow on one of our Azaleas. Thank goodness that it hasn't budded yet. Below are more photos! Be sure to click on the photos to see the pictures larger.

This is the smaller Rose bed (on the left side of the driveway, facing the street). There are 10 roses in this bed. The picture was taken on Monday ---before we covered the roses.

Later on Monday, all of the roses in this bed are covered!!!!!

We woke up early Tuesday morning to see about half an inch of snow on the ground. It was a wet, heavy snow---and melted by mid-afternoon.

The rest of the pictures are 'before and after the snow'. Here are our beautiful Red Dynasty tulips. You can see (barely) that it was already snowing on Monday afternoon when these photos were taken.

The Red Dynasty Tulips --after the snow; Luckily, these tulips perked back up after the snow melted!!!

Orange Emperor Tulips

The Orange Dynasty Tulips--after the snow; (These also perked back up after the snow melted.)

Mardi Gras Tulip

I was afraid that Mardi Gras wouldn't straighten back up---but it did. By yesterday afternoon, it looked GREAT!!!!

Another picture of our "Dad Adams" Daffodils... They have been SO pretty this year. I guess that is why I have featured them several times in blogs recently.

The same group of Daffodils after the snow; Again, we were lucky since the snow melted quickly --and these Daffodils were not damaged. They (along with everything else) has perked back up and is as happy as we are to see the warmer temps and the sunshine... Happy Spring to all of you!!!
Hugs,

  1. Hopefully the last blast of winter is over for us too. The photos look good with and without the snow. Right now we prefer without, don't we?

  8. It's a good thing that you are pro active with your roses or you might have lost some.
Seeing your lovely yard has made me very dissatisfied with our bush lot! I'm not a gardener but I love to look at pretty yards so maybe this year I'll have to start.
My hubby is a grad from the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture and is a very keen gardener but even he is discouraged with our yard. Also having four large dogs running all through it is not easy to take!!!

  9. I'm glad the snow/freeze didn't affect your plants. We are back into the 80's today. Is that crazy or what?!?!?!?

  10. The pictures could all be titled: IRONY. Snow and flowers???

You will be fine...the buds will bloom to see another day. :)

Thanks for your help on the picture/loading deal. You are one smart cookie.

  11. Amazing how resilient the spring bulbs can be. Almost as if they know they might get into trouble by coming up too early. Glad you didn't have any damage.

  12. Your tulips are so beautiful. I'm glad your garden weathered storm!

  14. Thankfully your beautiful flowers escaped damage.Whew!I so look fprward to seeing the roses when they bloom.

  15. Glad it wasn't too bad. Many of the bulb plants don't really mind the snow if it is not too heavy. It's the roses and the flowering bushes and such that are so hard to protect. Happy Spring!

  16. I took the ferryboat pic last week when I visited Mother. It was very, very windy but didn't rain (much). I am going to see her tomorrow--Good Friday--for an Easter visit. I will be in Ellensburg for the weekend.

Today is RAIN, our 2 days of sunshine are gone. MB

  17. I LOVE tulips! After reading yesterday about all your covering up, I realized I have a clematis that has buds on it. I hope it survived!!

  18. Hopefully, this was the last of the cold snaps, and now we can start to nuture our gardens...
It looks like everything survived the snow in your garden, now I can't wait to see the pictures of that spectacular Madi Gras tulip when it blooms.
    Hugs.

  19. Our beautiful sunshine is gone and we have rain today ... but it is warm ... i.e. above freezing.

Glad your plants all survived ... those spring bloomers are pretty hardy.

  20. The tulips are just beautiful! I'm glad they "sprang back" after the snow; they're too pretty to have a shortened life.

Hoping Spring is here to stay in Arkansas, too.

  21. Betsy: I hope you got through with little damage but the trees will suffer.

  22. Because of the snow the trees will suffer
    Cheers!

  24. Since I don't live where it snows, I am surprised to see that tulips can withstand snow like in your pictures. Glad your weather's warming up now. Happy Spring!

  25. It's just so heartbreaking to see snow on those gorgeous flowers.

  26. Dear Betsy, I really hope spring is coming to you in short time. Your flowers are so beautiful! Seeing them through my computer screen already makes me bounce in joy. They must be much more lovely in real life. I would be thrilled if you add the Make My Heart Smile Award on your blog, because I do get these warm feelings whenever I arrive on your blog or read your comments on mine or other blogs :). Have a great week.

  27. I think it's amazing how daffodils, tulips and crocus all come back after such cold weather. Let's hope that's THAT and there is no more super cold.

  28. Those tulips are gorgeous! This is a very tenaceous winter, isn't it?

  29. I'm glad to hear your flowers made it through the snow. I guess they just shook off those snowflakes and went on being beautiful.

  30. Funny how the ghost of winter still lingers on. I hope that that was it and no more snow for you (or me). Spring is so promising at the moment but we need some warm days to really bring it on full throttle.
Luckily tulips are hardy and in fact thrive in the cooler temperatures. The mardi gras are very beautiful.

  31. I love your tulip shots also. We have had a few cold days up here, and on Monday it snowed all day. the snow has more or less all gone. Hopefully that is it, until November/December.

  34. I feel your pain... a few years back we got snow just as the tulips were opening. ON A BRIGHTER NOTE - it did melt fast.

I love the way you have the beds marked off with the brick. great idea.

    Happy Spring

  35. I am so glad they survived the snow. I love the Dad Adams "Dad Adams" Daffodils
And the brick work you did in the garden. Do you trim your roses down in fall ? I know old roses grow on old wood. And some roses love to be trimmed, I had to leave all of mine in St. Louis.

  36. Hi there!

The Azaleas must be freezing to death, they are covered with snow LOL.

Everything looks so pretty with snow in them. Or maybe I find them awesome just because we don't have it here LOL.

What beautiful Red Dynasty Tulips and Daffodils! I would like to pick those flowers from your garden without your permission LOL kidding.

  37. The beautiful colours of the tulips looks great contrasted with the snow. I am glad they are happy after they were able to feel such a unique event in their lives.

  38. It is a strange winter indeed all across the country. I am basking in incredible warm temperatures which is remarkable but I'm nervous because it can change in a heartbeat...
I love the tulips and am so relieved that they had come back to life after the snow had coated them!

Hugs to the both of you♥♥
