Yesterday was a sunny but fairly cold day in the Glade. There were quite a few birds out, but I didn't get any new photos. But, about 4 p.m., I glanced out on the golf course fairway right behind our house--- and what to my wundering eyes should appear but NO miniature sleigh but eight (NO--there were TEN) tiny (NOT so tiny) Reindeer!!!!!! TEN????? WOW!!! I've never seen a group of TEN of them before. How special is this!!!! Hope you enjoy my photos!!!! Be sure and enlarge them for better views.

ReplyDeleteWith that many do they destroy your vegetation, and decorative plants around your home? Beautiful animals, but I know that on Long Island, NY and in CT, they have become a nuisance in suburban areas. Here in the Adirondacks huting seasons keeps the population trimmed out. You certainly got some great shots of them.

They are there often. One morning some high school kids stopped to help a young deer that was caught in a fence. On the radio they were saying tell him not to do that he will get hurt. All worked out well that time neither the kid or the deer were hurt.
Personal deer musings. Having a bit of Native American ancestry as part of my heritage (Seneca -Iroquois), I own a pouch made from white deerskin and otter that I wear with my traditional handmade beaded wool dress and leggins. I have eaten venison. Hunting should IMHO be done responsibly rather than just for sport.
ReplyDeleteOnce I was driving down a dark country road at night in Southern Maryland with a developmentally disabled passenger. Deer ran straight at the car and we hit it at about 50 miles an hour. In fact, the car spun around and hit the deer twice. Miraculously, nobody was hurt and there was only $6 worth of damage to a headlight.
To end on a lighter note, once while stopped at a traffic light near a deer crossing sign in Amherst, New York, a family of five deer happened to cross right at that exact moment ... and they crossed with the light, right by the sign, like they could read and knew they had the right of way! Amazingly true.
And any time you can photograph ten deer, now that's fun! :-)

ReplyDeleteWe have noticed them coming out of the woods again, one by one, last count fifteen....all in a row.
They run between the rock walls and over into the pasture....
I love them, but unfortunatley, a lot of hunters love them in a different way :(

Those are wonderful shots, Betsy! Where I used to live, the deer would congregate in a field next to our house every night. When we'd shine a flashlight out there, we'd see about thirty pairs of eyes. But I never got any good shots (camera shots, that is). To tell the truth, even though I think they are lovely animals, I held a bit of a grudge against those deer since they ate my hostas and rhododendrons down to nubs every single year. But they sure are pretty.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful creatures. I use to go sit in hunting stand & watch them. Turkeys & fox also. Nothing like watching wild life in their habitat. But they can be dangerous. They will attack you sometimes if they are injured.
ReplyDeleteDo any of you remember when the big buck named "Streamer" was killed in Cades Cove? A couple ------ from Fl. went up there & of all things they used silencers on their guns. They wound up not getting anything out of it like they should have. I said they should have been sent to prison. That was a federal offense.

Thanks to all for stopping by today... I didn't see the deer today--but it was MUCH warmer and lots of people were outside. Deer don't come around much when they see people.

ReplyDeleteHoly cow! It's a HERD of deer! Absolutely gorgeous! My personal favorite deer story happened when I was a teenager... I was horseback riding with my friend Sarah on a path in the woods and a HUGE buck jumped out in front of us - we ALL froze (luckily our horses didn't freak out) - everyone locked eyes - and then the buck jumped back into the woods on the other side of the path and we continued on our way. The whole "interaction" took maybe 10, 15 seconds.... but time really stood still for it. It was magical.
