Skyland Resort on Skyline Drive, Virginia

This is my last post from our Thanksgiving Trip of 2011... (No applause please!!!! ha ha)... If you are new to my blog (and I have had several new folks since 2012 began),  and IF you want to see any of those other posts,  you can click HERE.  There are 10 posts total --including this one.  OR---if you want information on the Skyland Resort where we stayed,  you can click HERE for more information.

It took us three days to get to Skyland Resort that week, since we stopped so much and did many more things along the way.   BUT--we finally got there.   As usual for us,  we had alot of rain while there that week.  We did get out and take some pictures --but most all of our pictures this year were taken during the rainy, foggy conditions...

Hope you enjoy our pictures from Skyland.  This is a neat resort with a great restaurant (we had our turkey dinner there)---so we highly recommend it to you.   Be sure and enlarge the pictures for larger views.

This is a picture of us in our room.   I must admit that I was miserable when that picture was taken,  with an incredibly painful stiff neck.. (It went away when I got home and got some muscle relaxant pills from my doctor.)  As you probably know,  I had had hernia surgery in October and was still recooping from that.  I assume this trip --as much as I enjoyed it--was a little too much for me so soon.  BUT--it was great and we did have a good time.

Here is our room (building) from the outside.   We were on the top floor to the right of the room with the light on...  We had a wonderful balcony in the back with a view of the Shenandoah Valley below.  VERY nice!!!!!

Anytime we got out to take pictures,  this is what we saw!!!!   The fog was thick and stayed with us during our stay there.   The good news about the weather was that it gave us a chance to stay in the room,  relax and read a good book!!!!!  Life was GOOD.

Here's one more fog picture that George took....  We both love taking pictures of trees ---so this one is neat,  surrounded by the fog...

Because of the fog,  we didn't have much of a view of the Shenandoah Valley this time,  but as the fog lifted and clearer skies took over one night,  George went out on the balcony and took a picture of the lights in the valley below.  Pretty,  don't you think?

I love this photo of the sky ---when we left Skyland and headed home.  If we could have stayed another few days,  we may have had some sunny skies there.  But--it was time to go home!  Isn't that a great picture of the SKY that morning???

Finally,  when we got home to our beautiful Cumberland Plateau,  this is what we saw right before we drove into our driveway...  I think that sunset was welcoming us home.  Pretty,  isn't it????

Hope you enjoyed our pictures.  It was truly a fabulous trip ---and if you haven't traveled on the Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive,   please do it!!!!!  It's AWESOME.

Have a great day.

On the Road to Skyland Resort----Part I

I got so involved sharing Christmas pictures in December  that I didn't finish sharing our Thanksgiving Trip with you.  On Thanksgiving Week,  George and I drove  on the Blue Ridge Parkway  from Asheville, North Carolina,  all the way to the end of the parkway.  For those of you who do not know,  the Blue Ridge Parkway ends ---and Skyline Drive continues north... We were on our way almost to the end of Skyline Drive (at Front Royal, Virginia) to the Skyland Resort...

I have a couple more sets of pictures to share from that wonderful trip.  I'll share one this week and another one next week.  These pictures were taken over a two -day period BEFORE we got to the Skyland Resort..

Above is a great photo of the view from the Blue Ridge Parkway.   Be sure to click on all pictures to make them larger.

George really worked hard using his muscles to hold this TINY rock up!!!!!! ha ha

We saw MANY deer while driving on the Parkway AND Skyline Drive... Here is a young male...  If you know this area,  you probably have heard of the Big Meadows area.  This deer was near that area.  Pretty one, isn't he?

This is the Big Meadow in WINTER...  It is truly a 'big meadow' ---so it's appropriately named.   If you enlarge this picture,  you can see deer grazing out in the meadow.

George hiked down a little creek path --and captured this marvelous reflection...

Here is a picture of the two of us --taken at an overlook on Skyline Drive... I loved the sky on this day... It had been cloudy --but was trying to clear up...

Next week,  I'll share another set of pictures from that Thanksgiving trip... If you missed any of the previous blog posts from this trip,  click HERE.   There are a total of 9 posts from this  wonderful trip.

More of the Blue Ridge Mountains

If you missed the last post showing our trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway on Thanksgiving Week,  please click HERE.   Today I'll share one more group of photos from our stops at the overlooks along our way.   Above is a picture of Price Lake.   Seeing this beautiful lake along the parkway was neat!!!   I think you get a taste of everything  when you stop at the overlooks along the Parkway.

This waterfall is 'almost' named after me...  Its name is Betsey's Rock Falls... In the picture above,  I was hiding the "E" ---so that it could be MY waterfall.  This waterfall is hard to see since it falls down the mountain in the distance.

This is Betsey's Rock Falls.  George put the long lens on his camera and got a picture of it... It is quite far away.

I love the clouds in this picture.  OH---so much beauty along the parkway!!!!!

Finally,  here is another great photo of the BLUE Ridge Mountains.  See why they are called 'blue'????   Love seeing the layers of mountains!

Hope you enjoyed going on our little trip with us today---along the Blue Ridge Parkway.. Next week---I'll share more,  as we travel north toward Skyland Resort...

On another note,  this Mama was a 'happy camper' on Saturday.  Son Jeff brought his girlfriend to meet Mama!!!!!  Dawn is AWESOME ---and I SO approve... She's so personable, caring and smart.... Jeff has a "keeper" for sure.

I was so excited that I forgot to take any pictures... Luckily they brought me a neat photo of them which they framed and I have on the end table next to our sofa....  Thanks Jeff and Dawn ---and thanks for coming!!!!  I love you BOTH very much.  Above is the picture they brought me....  Aren't they adorable?  (There's another picture of them on my Facebook page ---if you have FB.)

Have a great day.

More ORCHIDS from Biltmore

If you missed the last post showing the gorgeous ORCHIDS at the Biltmore House and Gardens in Asheville, North Carolina,  click HERE.   Today I'll show you a few more photos of those beautiful orchids.   Above is a favorite of mine... Love that color!!!  Be sure to enlarge the photos for some bigger pictures.

This little white one is simple ---but oh, how gorgeous... Orchids are hard to grow --unless you live in a tropical area.   When I was younger,  a friend's mother used to grow orchids in her home.  She had a sun room ---and could keep it just the right temperature in order to grow them.  They were gorgeous!!!   In the Conservatory at the Biltmore---they grow them in one of their rooms in which the conditions are perfect for them...  Some of the plants at the Biltmore need a HOT room and some need a cool room.. They offer it all inside the Conservatory.

This purple color just jumped out at me... I love the color, purple,  anyhow ---and this one was beautiful.

Here is another beautiful orchid... I don't know how many different varieties of orchids there are,  but there must be MANY.

I love yellow flowers ---so this one called my name also... Isn't it pretty?

Here is another gorgeous color...  Is this magenta?  Whatever the color is,  these orchids are beautiful...

Hope you enjoyed seeing the orchids from the Biltmore Conservatory.   We are buying season's passes again this next year since we love that place so much.  We hope to do what we did this year and go there during all seasons....

Hope you have a great day.

Peaks of Otter ---Part II

Here are a few more photos of the gorgeous Peaks of Otter,  on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Roanoke, VA.  George took the picture above when he was wandering around in front of our lodge room.

That is Sharp Top ---which we visited the last time we were here (August, 2010).   On that trip,  we took the Sharp Top bus up the mountain part of the way and then hiked to the top.  What a great view we had from the top.  (Be sure to enlarge pictures by clicking on them.)

This picture was taken in 2010 when we climbed up to the top of Sharp Top Mountain.  George went all the way to the 'top of the world' ---and I stood down one level and took his picture.

And this one was taken from the TOP ---looking down on the Peaks of Otter lodges/facilities... Aren't they pretty?  (Remember that these two pictures were taken in August of 2010 when we were here the first time.  I remember the hike up Sharp Top well---since I had just had knee surgery in June of that year.... Yipes!!!)

I love seeing the reflections in the lake in this picture.

Look who is standing on the balcony ---outside our room!!!

Here is another picture of some of the gorgeous grounds at the Peaks of Otter.

Lastly,  here is a picture of the other side of our lodge,  along with Sharp Top Mountain!!!  We were getting ready to leave ---so George took one last picture of the lodge... If you expand the photo---you can see the sign.

Hope you enjoyed seeing our pictures from the Peaks of Otter.    If you want to see more pictures from our August, 2010 trip here,  click HERE  and HERE and HERE.   Those posts will give you more history of the area --along with more photos.  This truly is a beautiful place to find peace and relaxation.

Peaks of Otter

As we continued our drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway,  we finally got to our destination,  the Peaks of Otter... We had stopped so much during the drive that we didn't get to the Peaks of Otter until WAY after dark....

NOTE for anyone driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway after DARK:  ALL of the deer come out after dark---so we had to drive very slowly so that we wouldn't hit them .  We also didn't want damage to our Prius!!!!  We must have seen from 50-100 deer that night on the parkway.  I was on 'deer patrol' ----trying to spot them as George drove!!!   Not FUN --and kinda scary!!!  SO-----------don't drive up there after dark!!!

We got to the Peaks just in time for some dinner in their restaurant and then to our room to get some sleep... I think we went to bed about 9 p.m.  that night.  We were 'tarred'... ha ha

Here are some pictures around the Peaks of Otter which we took that next morning.  The picture above shows the lake and surrounding area.  Pretty,  isn't it???

George wandered outside to get more photos... The grounds here and facilities are SO nice and so peaceful.

You can see the fog on top of Sharp Top Mountain (one of three PEAKS here).  The last time we were here (Summer of 2010),  we took a bus part of the way UP that mountain --and hiked the rest of the way up to the top... I remember that hike well --since I had had knee surgery in June that year!!!!!

As I said,  the property maintenance/facilities here are so nice... I just feel a peace when I'm here.  Our room looked out toward the lake ---and we had a balcony where we could sit and enjoy the area... Isn't that little bridge pretty?

Here is another view of the sun shining on the lake.

I have one more set of photos from the Peaks of Otter to show you --and will do that next week...  Have a great weekend and I will see you on Monday.

The Lagoon at Biltmore

Our favorite spot at the Biltmore House and Gardens is when we drive to the Lagoon...  This is a wonderful (and not highly publicized) area of the estate.   We drive down a gravel road ---and love it here, since we can see both the back of the house (mansion),  and we can enjoy a picnic along the water while watching a 'ton' of Canada Geese making lots of noise.  We can also continue driving in that area --as the gravel road goes between the lagoon and the French Broad River... IF you ever get to Biltmore,  check out this area!!!

Today I'll share some pictures from this area.  Above is a picture of the Lagoon and the back of the Biltmore House...

George took this picture with his long-lens, so that we could get a better view of the back of the Biltmore House.  By looking at the first picture,  you can see how far away the house really is --from where we were.

I love seeing the Canada Geese ---and there are lots and lots of them here..  There's a small island in the middle of the Lagoon ---and the geese live on that island.. I wish I knew how many geese there are ---but I'll guarantee there are MANY.

More Canada Geese!!!!

And ---here's one more shot of the Canada Geese!!!

Finally,  here's a picture of us standing next to the Lagoon --with a view of the Biltmore House and Gardens in the background.

Hope you enjoyed my photos from the Lagoon...

Welcome to DECEMBER.... (Hard to believe,  isn't it???)

Oh, those Gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains

After leaving Biltmore and spending the night in Asheville,  we then traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway --heading north...  Here are some of the things we encountered along the way that day.  I love seeing all of the layers of mountains (above) ---in addition to the clouds...  Below are more pictures... Enlarge the photos for some larger pictures.

Here is a photo of Linville Falls.  We had seen it before --but that was years ago.  George hiked for awhile to get some 'up close' photos---while I took it easy!!!!

This gal loves riding on the parkway...  Can't you see that happy face?

We found a really nice place for a picnic lunch... There was a little creek behind us....SO relaxing.

Here is the little creek behind our picnic table.  Isn't it pretty?

I have many more photos along the parkway --but I'll share them gradually...

Hope you have a wonderful day!!!  Did you get snow yesterday????  We did---but it didn't stick much ---or when it did,  it melted quickly... SO---I'll just say that we had flurries all day!!!!  Oh --how I love SNOW!!!!

Orchids at the Biltmore Conservatory

The Orchids in the Conservatory at Biltmore House and Gardens are some of the prettiest I have ever seen... Today I will show you some of those gorgeous Orchids... Be sure and enlarge the photos for a better look!

Aren't these just gorgeous?   I truly don't know much about Orchids ---but I do love seeing them.  There are just so many varieties...

Hope you have a tremendous Tuesday!!!  We have had more rain in 2 days than we had all year I think... It has rained and rained and rained.  Now --they say we might get some snow flurries... December is almost here!!!
