More VISITORS Came to See Us!

From the smiles on our faces,  you will know how happy we were to have visitors this week!!!
Besides our son's visit on Saturday,  we had two other sets of visitors this past week.  On Monday  (6/2/14),   a childhood friend (Big Stone Gap girl --from my hometown) and her hubby came to our area... Mary Elizabeth Quillen Claywell (we call her MEQ)  and hubby, Doyle,  spent the day with us and we had a fantastic time together.   George and I took them to Fall Creek Falls State Park (our special place) --and showed them around... Then we enjoyed dinner at the lodge restaurant!!!!

Here are some pictures from Fall Creek Falls.  Hope you enjoy them.  Click on them for enlargements.
I introduce you to MEQ and Doyle...  MEQ is a Big Stone Gap, Virginia gal (personable, happy,  fun to be around--like all BSG gals) and Doyle is a Kentucky boy.  Like George,  Doyle doesn't always quite understand us BSG gals!!!!! ha ha .... MEQ and Doyle met in college at LMU in Kentucky.

We could not go to Fall Creek Falls without showing them the MAIN waterfall there.  It was pretty although,  like our area,  it was DRY here at this time, so not much water was coming over the falls.

MEQ and Betsy checking out the gorge area at Fall Creek Falls

This gorge area at Fall Creek Falls is 'locally' called the Grand Canyon of TENNESSEE.  George got a great picture of the mountains.

Doylc, Betsy and MEQ at Fall Creek Falls State Park  (Buzzard's Roost Overlook)

The other special visitor we had last week was a cousin of mine,  Sallie Strang.  Sallie was driving her RV from Colorado back to her home in Washington DC---and stopping along the way to see some family/friends.  We are so glad that she stopped in our area on Friday,  6/6/14.   We didn't have too much time with her ---but we were able to catch up on all of the family and enjoy a meal (her treat) at Cracker Barrel.

Sallie's grandmother  (Hattie Bruce Cummings) and my grandmother on Mom's side (Ida Bruce Ballard) were sisters...  That makes Sallie and I SECOND cousins.

Meet Sallie Strang---my 2nd cousin!

Bonnie, Betsy, Carol ---more 2nd cousins
This picture obviously wasn't taken recently.  This was in October of 2012 --when these two cousins visited us.  These are two more cousins in the same family.  Bonnie Grubb Sweigart  and Carol Cummings Levack have the same grandmother (Hattie Bruce Cummings) as Sallie Strang does---but all three of them belong to different siblings in Hattie and Howard Cummings' big family (of 9 children).

SO--now that you are thoroughly confused,  let me just say that Bonnie,  Carol and Sallie are all FIRST cousins --and I am the SECOND cousin to each/all of them....  Got it now????  Oh how I love Genealogy!!!!

Here is Sallie's little compact RV... Amazing how much they can get in those little RV's!!!!
At the campground not far from us where Sallie stayed,  there was a family of RABBITS all around... They were so cute!!!!  You can barely see the black one --but he is lying flat on his tummy with his feet hanging out...  So precious!!!

Another cute little chubby bunny;  They really liked being around people!!!!

Here is Sallie beside her RV ---talking to the bunnies!!!!
Well---as you can tell,  we've had a busy week (like all of them seem to be).  Hope you enjoyed meeting another cousin of mine --and a good friend today!

Have a glorious Wednesday.  Please say a prayer for blog friend, Sandie (Chatty Chrone) as she is having serious surgery today!  God Bless her!

Life on the Cumberland Plateau

Our little home  during Fall (2012)
As you probably know,  life for us has been VERY busy lately....  First was the big trip out west in September.  That was followed by my son's gorgeous wedding.  THEN---we went to Ohio to do some hiking with our good friends, Neal and Patti...  After coming home from Ohio,  we enjoyed a weekend here visiting with cousins/family/friends who were visiting in the area.

Then,  if all of this hasn't been enough,  we took off to the Smokies last Tuesday to see the Fall colors....   In between all of that ---this is a busy time of year for us in our yard.  We both have spent many hours (with many more to come) blowing/raking/mowing leaves.... Autumn is a pretty season and I love it ---but when those leaves start coming down,  there's alot of work to be done.

Anyhow---to make a long story short,   I apologize for not visiting your blogs very much lately...  I do try to keep up--but it's not easy.  There just isn't enough hours in the day right now!!!!! Oh Well..... Life moves on no matter what!!!!

Today I will show you a few pictures I took in and around our yard on October 23.    AND--I'll share a few pictures of our visit with  my cousins/family on October 20/21.   Hope you enjoy seeing more of our crazy lives here in Fairfield Glade --on the Cumberland Plateau.  Be sure to click on the photos for enlargements.

I take alot of pictures of our little home --and love to compare them during different seasons of the year.  We had a 'quick' Fall here this year.  Trees seemed to stay green for a long time but turned quickly when they did turn ---and even though there are some reds and yellows around,  the primary colors right now are the browns/golds....  I won't say that we have had a beautiful Fall here ---like we saw in Ohio or the Smokies, but nevertheless,  it is still pretty!!!

Thought you'd enjoy seeing my little Fall decorations up close and personal.   Can you see the big ceramic pumpkin on the porch????  I got that one on a visit to Kroger's one day.  The employee there was setting up a pumpkin display --and accidentally dropped some of them.  We stopped to help him pick up the pieces.  This one only lost its lid ----so he gave it to us FREE of charge.  I bought some Fall flowers and put in it for decorations... Neat, huh?

Here is our pretty Maple in our front yard... I love the colors of the Maples in Fall.

Here is one of the MANY Burning Bushes in our area... This is a very popular bush and there's at least one in most every yard!!!!!   They are gorgeous in Fall.

AND---here's a picture of our front yard looking up the hill/street.  Note that there are a few more ROSES still blooming.  That is our neighbor's big white house in this picture.  Note the leaves on the ground.... That was AFTER we raked and blew them!!!!! Those leaves are really coming down now, just like rain... ha ha

As I said above,  we visited with two of my cousins and their families twice weekend of Oct. 20/21.   This picture shows all eight of us enjoying a meal together at the Cumberland Mountain State Park Restaurant on Sunday, Oct. 21.  We had a wonderful time together.

Here are my two cousins,  Carol (Michigan) and Bonnie (Florida).   Carol and Bonnie are 1st cousins since they have the same grandmother.   I'm a cousin on down the line since their grandmother is my mother's mother's sister.... (Figure that one out!!!!! ha)

Bonnie,  Betsy,  Carol
Finally here is a photo of the three of us cousins...  Since I have so little family left,   I love these gals ---and enjoy being with them so much.  Tennessee is a great place for us to meet since one lives in Michigan and one in Florida!!!!!!

Last Blooming Roses from our Yard 2012
LATER:  On Saturday,  October 27,  because VERY cold weather was coming our way,  George cut most of the remaining ROSES which were blooming in our yard --and brought them all inside...  I love having them inside --but hate to see Fall end.  We'll have to wait 'til Spring in order to have more rose blossoms...  Sigh!!!!

Hope you had a great weekend.  After such a warm (almost hot) week last week,  someone opened the freezer door--since it is MUCH colder this week... But--I love it!!!!  They even mentioned the "S" word (SNOW) on our TV weather report Saturday night... YIPES....  BUT--I'll stay warm--all snuggled up next to a big roaring fire in our wood-burning  fireplace!!!!

Have a great day.

Fall Colors at Fall Creek Falls

Here's another set of pictures from our Sunday visit to Fall Creek Falls with family. I was surprised to see as much Fall color as I did. That was the only sunny day we've had in awhile. The rains came back Monday---and it's supposed to rain most of the week. What's up with that????

Above is a picture of Fall Creek Falls in Autumn.. We have lots of picture of this waterfall and many when it had MUCH more water coming over the falls. BUT--the Fall colors around it are really pretty, aren't they? Below are more.

These two trees with their red and yellow colors were so pretty--with the sun hitting them.

Here's another picture of the gorge/canyon at Fall Creek Falls in Autumn.

This Sugar Maple is just beginning to change colors. I can only imagine how pretty it will be in another week or two.

A trip to Fall Creek Falls would not be complete if we didn't see some deer.. We actually saw several --mostly late in the afternoon.

Here's one last picture of us --sitting at the top of the gorge. George was again the picture-taker. Note those beautiful mountain ranges in the background. This place is just like a piece of what I think heaven will be!!!!!

More from Fall Creek Falls

Here's another set of photos from our trip on Sunday with family to Fall Creek Falls (about an hour southwest of here). If you want to see more pictures from Fall Creek Falls (since it is a VERY special place to George and me) --look on my sidebar on the right and find labels. Click on FALL CREEK FALLS listed under the Labels.

Above is a picture taken from the lodge looking across the lake. See those people out there in a rowboat???? Ready to go???? It looked like SO much fun!!!! More pictures are below.

Here we are --after a delicious buffet dinner. George took this picture of us. At the head of the table is Wes. On the left is John, Carol and Bonnie. And on the right is Darlene and me.

I love this picture showing the green evergreen and the red Fall colors.

Now let's enjoy the yelllows of Fall.

You can see Fall Creek Falls in the lower right corner--but I took this picture to show some of the Fall Colors along the gorge.

George took this picture of us ---standing VERY close to the Cascades.

George and I are on our way to Tallulah Gorge in Georgia today. I will have the laptop---so I'll catch up when possible (and when I have a signal in those mountains).

There will be one more post (using timer) tomorrow from Fall Creek Falls.

Hope you all will have a great week. I'll get back with you when I can.

P.S. I apologize for not clarifying that "Nanner Puddin" is nothing more than Banana Pudding--Southern Style (with all of the calories shaken OUT).... ha ha ha.... I thought everyone knew what "Nanner Puddin" was!!!!! My My!!! This ole' southern gal is 'lahrning'.....

Fall Creek Falls State Park

There were seven of us who went to Fall Creek Falls State Park (southwest of Crossville) yesterday. My two cousins and their families and George and I met at the restaurant at the park for dinner about 1:30 p.m. They had a delicious buffet topped off with the best "nanner" puddin' in the south!!!!! YUM!!!!

With George and me were Cousin Bonnie, Cousin Carol, her hubby John, and John's sister Darlene and her hubby Wes. Darlene and Wes live west of Crossville in Sparta, TN. Dinner was delicious ---and the fellowship was even better.

After dinner, Darlene and West had to leave --and George and I enjoyed showing off one of our very favorite places to Bonnie, Carol and John. The sun was shining and there were some pretty Fall colors. We showed them five waterfalls and the gorgeous gorge.

As you can imagine, we took alot of pictures. Today, I will share a few with you . Above is six of the seven of us (since George took the picture). From left to right: Wes, Darlene, me, Bonnie, John and Carol. Below are more!

Here is a picture of Cane Creek---showing some of the pretty Fall colors.

Standing at the lookout area (with Fall Creek Falls in the background): John, Carol, Bonnie and George

More pretty colors while looking across the gorge

Some nice person offered to take a picture of all five of us while we were at the overlook admiring the gorge.

We had a wonderful day ---and I think my family enjoyed that state park as much as George and I do. Hope you had a great weekend also.

Visit from Cousins

This weekend, two of my cousins came to visit. Carol and Bonnie are 1st cousins since they have the same grandmother. I am their 2nd cousin since my grandmother and their grandmother were sisters. I am the oldest of the three of us, being born in 1942. Carol was born in 1946 and Bonnie was born in 1947. We all remember each other while growing up --but I had lost touch until a couple of years ago. Bonnie and Carol are almost like sisters although Bonnie lives in Florida and Carol lives in Michigan. Meeting here in Tennessee is perfect for ALL of us.

Bonnie is married to Dave, and they have a beautiful home (which they keep remodeling) in Melbourne, FL. Bonnie is one of the most creative people I've known --and even though we are cousins, I didn't inherit any of her gifts of decorating, scrapbooking, etc.

Carol is married to John, and they live in Battle Creek, Michigan. Carol is like my good friend, Judy. Her life is all about her kids and grandkids.. She has 2 children, a son and a daughter, and five grandchildren.

Yesterday, the three of us cousins had a "Girls' Day Out".... We went shopping, antiquing, more shopping, and had lunch together. AND---there was a TON of talking going on the entire time.

Today, during the afternoon, there are 7 of us who are going to Fall Creek Falls for dinner at the state park restaurant there. Bonnie's husband couldn't come with her this time, but Carol's husband, John, is here. Carol and John are staying with John's sister and hubby who live in Sparta, TN (near here). SO---all of us (including George and me) are going to meet and enjoy dinner together, and also see the park and the waterfalls in the Fall. I hope to have some pictures soon.

Today, I'll introduce you to these two special cousins. George was nice enough to take some pictures before we left home yesterday for our fun day. Above is me, Bonnie and Carol taken inside our home in front of the fireplace. Below is one more of the three of us --taken outside near the front porch.

I hope all of you are having a wonderful weekend also.

August 5th, 2009---BIG DAY

George and I are home from a busy but fun vacation to Florida. We saw new waterfalls both going and coming; we visited my brother in Jacksonville; we toured the fort in St. Augustine; AND we celebrated my 67th birthday at Ormond Beach. Today I will share with you that wonderful day this past Wednesday when this OLD woman had another birthday!!!!! Above is a picture taken that afternoon when we met Cousin Bonnie and hubby Dave for dinner at New Smyrna Beach. I "caught up" (in age) with George on that day --and now we BOTH are 67... Yipes!!! Below are more pictures from that special day.

The first thing that morning, we stood out on our balcony in our oceanfront room and saw a beautiful sunrise... Is that not amazing????? I felt as if God was smiling down on ME on my birthday.

Part of that glorious day was spent at the beach--enjoying the sand and surf.. We even got into the water (ocean) on that HOT Florida day.

George enjoys reading when we go to the beach. I enjoy sleeping --but I also enjoy 'people-watching'. The building in the background was our motel. We were on the 5th floor--so we had a great view.

Two cousins, Bonnie and me, (who share the same birthday) met for a delicious seafood dinner at Blackbeard's Inn in New Smyrna Beach. Our husbands made sure that we enjoyed that 'double' celebration!!!!!!

Bonnie and Dave took this cute picture of George and me---after Bonnie and I had accused him of putting the camera bag down in some water.. He was trying to find out what we were laughing about.... Hmmmmmmm???? What was he really saying?????? (The camera bag was NOT in water--even though it looked like it was!!!) ha ha

After that delicious dinner and wonderful company, we headed back to our motel. Once we got there, guess what we saw????? The moon was just fabulous--over that water... WOW!!!

The darker it became, the prettier the moon's reflection was. SO---can you tell what a wonderful birthday I had????? I truly felt as if the sunrise and the moon over the water was there just for ME on August 5, 2009, along with my wonderful husband who was definitely also there for me!! What can I say??? Life is GOOD!

Hope you had a great week. I look forward to catching up with your blogs this next week.
