66 Diner ---on Route 66

On June 12,  on our way out west,  we spent the night at Albuquerque, New Mexico (took me about a month to learn to spell that city).... While we were there,  we wanted to visit the 'old town' area (another upcoming blog post),  and we wanted to drive a little on Route 66..  WELL---while driving on Route 66,  we were also looking for a neat little place to have some dinner... And we found it!!!!!!

We ate at the Route 66 Diner...What a neat little place .... There were so many memories in that little place ---of my life growing up in the 50's.  Today I'll just share some of what we enjoyed that evening --besides the delicious food....

Above is the outside of the little diner....  I remember those windows well ---since the old bus station in my home town in Virginia had windows just like that... Do you remember those kinds of windows????

Remember these things???  We had a 'hang-out' in my hometown when I was a teen,  called Carmines... I remember buying a chili bun and a coke for a QUARTER back then.  There were pinball machines in Carmines and also a juke box---similar to the one above.  We all loved that place!!!!

AND---do you remember the old-fashioned soda fountains???  We had one in our hometown --and my Daddy would take me there to buy me some ice cream when I was very young.  I  have loved ice cream to this day!!!!

We were lucky to have gotten to the 66 Diner as late as we did --since the crowds (and there were lots of people) had thinned out --just in time for us to take some pictures.

Remember that little gal??????   Remember the old gas pumps???? There's even an old bicycle hanging above Miss Betty.

There was so much memorabilia around that it was hard to take time to eat.... So many memories....

This really brought back memories to me.  My mother collected Green Stamps --and I remember sticking them in all of those little books for her.... I think she got some pretty nice items by saving these.... Remember this?

AND finally---did any of you ever own a Plymouth???  We never did --but I grew up and learned to drive on a 1950 Pontiac ... It was a straight-shift ---and I loved that car!!!!

Looks like this Plymouth had a "popeye"-----or maybe some say "perdiddle"....  Know what that means??????

As you can tell,  we had a great time in the 66 DINER in Albuquerque, New Mexico...  AND--the food was delicious... Their dessert special was Rhubarb Cobbler with ice cream.  WELL---I just "HAD" to have some of that since I haven't had rhubarb in many years... My mother used to make rhubarb often and I've always loved it.  The cobbler was FAN-TABULOUS!!!!!

Hope you enjoyed the 66 DINER....  There are so many neat places along old Route 66.  Hope you can check them out yourself sometime.

Hugs,

What a neat place, I would love to have some of those things! We would say perdiddle if we saw one headlight out and that would mean you were owed a kiss. I also remember green stamps!

What a great find and walk back in history. I love old time diners especially when the food is really good - we'll be sure to visit if we're in the area.

Oh . . . green stamps. And triple S blue stamps!
My first vacuum cleaner was purchased with 26 books of S & H green stamps donated by my mother.
I remember being very young and separating EACH stamp from the sheet before I pasted them carefully into the little squares in the book. I think my tongue got sore.

Hi Betsy, what nostalgia on Route 66. We had juke boxes but no soda fountains as those in your photos. We had / have Coke and icecream cones, though! I was thinking of Betsy Boop just a few days back! I remember so many of the things you posted from comic books, American ones! HA! One of the two articles that will be published by an adventure mag later this year, is about Route 62 in the Cape, South Africa. I think I did a post on it a couple of weeks ago: called GS Adventure. Route 62 was built for touring exactly like you did along Route 66 on your holiday. Thanks for the memories.

my kind of eating place for sure. all of this stirs my memories to. after i put the stamps in the booklets, mother would take me to the green stamp store and we would have to make hard decisions, like a mini walmart store, and all free. we used to go up on Alpine Hill to a little place like this to play the juke box. lots of memory lighters here.

A true step back in time. When I was growing up are lived on a farm away from places like this and also were so poor that there was no money to go to such a place.I do love rhubarb and make at least some rhubarb desserts every spring.

Yes, the juke box, Betty Boop, the soda fountain, ice-cream soda, the old '50 model studebaker which i first started driving in, even the thick glass squares in the corner of the building - ALL are in my memory bank! Except the "perdiddle"! I feel cheated now that I see I was supposed to get a kiss every time I saw a "pop-eye"!!! ☻☻☻☻☻

Oh I remember green stamps! I would sit and glue them into the books for my mother. To this day I still have the folding table and chairs that she bought with her green stamps.Wonderful thing about the table is it is soild wood which makes it sturdy. I've seen other friends have folding tables that were nothing more than metal and cardboard. They wobble every time you touch them. Not mine.

What fun. I remember most of those things. I had a friend whose father owned a gas station, and she and I used to work there on weekends, giving out the "bonus" gifts to those who got a fill-up. That was when the gas station attendant automatically filled your tank, washed your windshield, and checked your oil. And gas cost about 25 cents a gallon. :)

Hi Betsy,

Wow, this place looks so very much like the 63 Diner in Columbia that is my favorite place to eat! It plays all the oldies music from those days and the memorabilia all around is so neat to look at. Even the women's bathroom walls are fun to read while "sitting"...ha! Looks like a fun place to visit, glad you found it! I'll be back...I have a lot of catching up to do. Have a great day!

I would have loved this place...and yes it brought back memories for me.

I love ice cream, too....always have and always will I suppose.

I can remember buying big glass bottles of pop for a dime...those were the days!

LOVE this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As soon as I saw the diner picture, I was shocked, but know this post was going to be GOOD!! It is so much prettier inside than you would guess!! Love the checkered soda fountain with those teal stools. And did you notice there is a parking meter right beside the Plymouth? I collected and pasted Green Stamps. I got good quality binoculars with them, which I still have! But now I use my super zoom camera for binoculars! Having it in my purse is as good as binoculars. I also see that tiny glass fronted fridge where they keep the pie slices! This is my favorite post you have ever done.

I remember all of this stuff!!!
Some highlights:
Cheffy's Drugs had a 'soda fountain' where you could get all kinds of ice cream related stuff.

Mom also collected S&H green stamps and I remember putting them in the booklets. I don't remember anything we got though.

Fun post, Betsy! :>)

A fun look back in time which brought back a few memories of my own.
The soda fountain in my home town was called the Sweet Shop. I remember getting sodas there in those cone shaped paper cups for 15 cents.

Love diners like this one! What most caught my attention was the green stamp sign. Filling stamp books was always a treat for us; Mama got some really great things, too. Sometimes she'd let us pick out something that we wanted. It was kinda' like Christmas!

I want to go there!!! How neat!!!
My husband brought me a jacket with route 66 on it last year when he went through there on hunting trip.

Do I ever remember green stamps. Mom and I would get the catalog out and count the books to see what we could get. It was fun. She would let me pick out things too. Then after green stamps, there was Gold Bond Stamps. Daddy worked for Safeway and they gave gold bond.....such memories.

Wow, that really was a trip back in time. The good old days for sure.
We used to play the one eyed car game also. That was a win/win for the guys. They got kissed regardless of who saw it first.

I didn't grow up with these diners, but it didn't take me very long before I fell in love with the one in our town in Colorado Springs.
Those handmade shakes were the best I have ever tasted, the decor was very similar, with all the fifties memorabilia, when we stopped at the Cumberland Mountain General Store in your neck of the woods, they also had an old fashioned diner.....wonderful food !

You hit a big one this time! Yes, Betsy, I do remember most all of that stuff from my teenage years. Betty Boob, PaDiddle, the old cars, soda fountains, and old Juke Boxes are still part of my many memories from back then. Getting 6 plays for a quarter on the juke box, a cherry soda for a dime, ice cream sundies for 15 cents, and just hanging out at the local soda fountain. These are all fond memories of the past. I'm so very sorry to see that these day's have gone and never to return.

I am happy you were joyous in reminiscing the past, and i'm amazed there is still this kind in your part of the world. I've been able to see the jukebox here too, long time ago also, now it's the videoke/karaoke thing. I am happy for you and George.

Hi, Betsy, what a cool place. And all the stories of Route 66-----and I remember all this stuff too. I used to love Lemon milkshakes--YUM!!

PS. Sometime today I am doing another waterfall---just for you too---and yes I think I found someone wonderful---MB

How wonderful! Wow there really is sooooo much memorabilia! I DO remember s&h green stamps! I too, filled in those books for my mom but I think they had to fade out as I got to be a bit older.

It was so neat to come off of your family post to this one. I shared about my great grandparents ~ they had sooo much of this stuff in their home! They had a pool billiard room and it was connected to their living area but could shut it off as well. Anyways, they had a pin ball machine, pool table, pokeno table, awesome signs every where, a glass pop bottle machine, a bar set up with some of the coolest little stuff you have ever seen. I was sooo sad that when they died I wasn't allowed the chance to go through ANYTHING of theirs. Still makes me soooo sad but thanks for sharing this and allowing me to go back and think about all the wonderful times we had there!

Betsy, Here I am catching up on your recent trip. I love this post! My dad had "company" plymouth station waggons until I was in high school and he bought my mom her first car that was just "ours". He drove the "company car". To this day, I love a jukebox, especially ones filled with the music of the 50's and 60's. A juke box with the song, "A summer place" takes me way back....lol Lake George, NY was a big summer draw for families but also older kids, 18-25 ish. It was Viet Nam and my girl friends and I rented a motel, I drove my Chevy Malibu up and I can still see the guys uniform walking the streets. Love all the Route 66 items. In Az, the most I really had were street signs from Route 66, we were on but nothing like your restaurant. Such memories. Thank you for sharing these delightful pictures.
